Digging in the dirt is a favorite pastime for many people, both children and adults.  Planting seeds, nurturing them to grow and harvesting the fruits of the labor is both rewarding and valuable to understanding where food comes from.  Over this week, children will discover the anatomy of a seed and the elements required for it to grow.  They will create a mini greenhouse, which will house an environment for the seeds to flourish.  They will “start” seeds at the beginning of the week, but providing them with a moist, well-lit environment so they can observe the sprout emerge from the seed.  Then, they will understand how and where to plant the seeds in their greenhouse and what to do with them as the plants grow larger.  The children will also learn about farmers markets and the cost of food, as they set up shop outside to buy and sell fruits and veggies.
