Hello! My name is Karen Murphy, and I am so excited to be joining the staff at Lupine Lane as an After Care Teacher!
I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I first fell in love with working with young children when I as at young age myself; my Mom and I taught Sunday School and VBS at the church we attended. Just after graduating high school, I worked in a preschool class teaching a wonderful group of two-year-olds. I then went on to college at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos and earned a degree in Elementary Education.
I have called Austin home since graduating from college in 1986. Although the city has been growing and changing at a furious pace over the last several years, it is still a great place to live, especially for outdoor enthusiasts like myself. I love hiking, being near the water and otherwise engaging in nature. In the last few years, I have been incredibly fortunate to visit and hike in New Zealand, Australia, the Rocky Mountain and Great Smokey Mountain National Parks and Kauai, Hawaii!
Over the years, I have taught in preschool programs throughout the Austin area. I’ve also taught Spanish and computer enrichment classes to preschoolers and school-aged children, and volunteered and substituted in the public school system.
I have also raised three incredible children. I have a 28-year-old daughter, who now lives in Houston and is planning to be married in early 2020. I also have a 25-year-old son, who resides in Austin and works for a transportation company. And, I have an 18-year-old daughter, who is a senior at Westlake High School this year. Go Chaps!
I returned to school in 2009 to pursue a graduate degree in Education, which included a Literacy Specialization. I received my Master’s degree in 2011. Since then, I have tutored dozens of students in reading and literacy and worked as a nanny and childcare provider to several local families. I am incredibly passionate about providing children with a strong foundation in literacy education.
I am very grateful for this opportunity to share my knowledge with your children in fun and engaging ways. My goal is instill a life-long love of learning as they continue on their course of growth and development.
